One-click unsubscribe in Customer Insights – Journeys
In this article, you will learn how to set up one-click unsubscribe and how it affects your work.
One-click unsubscribe has been a mandatory standard since February 2024 – Gmail and Yahoo require senders to implement this feature to protect users and domain reputation. Since November 2025, Gmail has tightened its policy and announced temporary or permanent rejections, going beyond the previous practice of cutting off senders with deliverability issues from Gmail mitigation.
One-click unsubscribe – what you need to know
Requirements from February 2024
Starting February 1, 2024, Gmail and Yahoo required a one-click unsubscribe for senders who send more than 5,000 messages per day. This means that every marketing email (transactional emails are exempt) must include headers compliant with RFC 8058, which allow users to unsubscribe with a single click without leaving their email client.
The “unsubscribe” button is still required
It is worth noting that the link or “unsubscribe” button in the email is still mandatory. One-click unsubscribe works in message headers, but the user must also have a visible element, e.g., in the footer.
What does the switch look like?
In Gmail and Yahoo, the “Unsubscribe” button appears next to the sender’s address in the mail interface. This means that the recipient does not have to scroll through the message – one click is all it takes.
In Dynamics 365 Customer Insights – Journeys, this feature can be enabled in the settings with a single switch. It activates headers compliant with the RFC 8058 standard: List-Unsubscribe and List-Unsubscribe-Post.
After changing it, to make sure that everything works correctly, it is worth waiting up to 40 minutes (if time is of the essence, you can perform several tests to check if the functionality has been activated earlier).
Comparison of emails sent to Gmail
In Gmail, messages with a correctly implemented header display an additional “Unsubscribe” button next to the sender’s address. If it is not implemented, the button does not appear, and the risk of the message being marked as spam increases.
Both screenshots show a situation where the One-click unsubscribe switch is disabled. As you can see, there is no button in the message header that allows the receiver to unsubscribe. This is the case when opening emails on both mobile and desktop devices.
After enabling the One-click unsubscribe switch, you will see the option to unsubscribe in the header. On a desktop, it is less visible – it is located in the right corner of the screen.
Pressing these buttons will open a new pop-up allowing you to confirm your unsubscription (desktop on the left, mobile on the right). Confirming your unsubscription will automatically enter you into the Consent Center as Opt Out.
Once the recipient confirms their desire to unsubscribe, the “Unsubscribe” button disappears. This allows for one-time cancellation of the subscription and also serves as feedback for the user.
Why is implementing one-click unsubscription important?
„Starting February 2024, Gmail requires the following for senders who send 5,000 or more messages a day to Gmail accounts: authenticate outgoing email, avoid sending unwanted or unsolicited email, and make it easy for recipients to unsubscribe. Starting November 2025, Gmail is ramping up its enforcement on non-compliant traffic. Messages that fail to meet the email sender requirements will experience disruptions, including temporary and permanent rejections.”
In other words, failure to implement these measures may result in the domain being blocked and messages being permanently rejected.
Summary
It’s a simple change that requires a one-time setup, but it can protect your domain from serious consequences. Implementing one-click unsubscribe not only meets Yahoo and Google requirements, but also improves your brand reputation and reduces the risk of recipients reporting your messages as spam.
